The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination conducted in India for admission to various postgraduate programs in engineering, technology, and architecture. GATE is jointly administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The GATE exam serves multiple purposes, including admission to postgraduate programs (Masters and Ph.D.) in Indian higher education institutes, recruitment for public sector companies, and eligibility for financial assistance through scholarships and fellowships. Candidates with a rank of less than 100 will be called for the interview to various posts in top PSUs in India. Govt agencies like BARC, ISRO, DRDO, etc., select eligible candidates for the post of scientists through GATE Examination.
The GATE exam is almost similar to the examinations mentioned above. So once you prepare for GATE, it will eventually help you to crack these examinations. Many students opt for coaching to enhance their preparation, and there are specialized "gate coaching institutes" that offer comprehensive guidance and study materials to help aspirants achieve better results.
Due to the quality and worldwide acceptance of the GATE Examination, it is now considered as a medium for admission into various postgraduate programs in top foreign universities. Admission to most of these institutions is purely based on the GATE score, whereas some IITs and IISC conduct interviews in addition to GATE SCORE.
GATE is a computer-based test that assesses the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. The exam duration is three hours, and it consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), numerical answer type (NAT), and Multiple Select Questions (MSQ). There are 65 questions summing upto a total of 100 marks. Test Paper has questions carrying 1 mark and 2 marks, and ⅓ and ⅔ negative marks for incorrect answers, respectively. No negative marking for MSQ & NAT.
GATE covers a wide range of disciplines, including Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and many more.
Candidates who have completed or are in the final year of their Bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, or architecture can appear for the GATE exam. There is no age limit for taking the exam.
